1) What is Chi FusionTM?

It is an online Tai Chi course designed so that you can learn from home at your own pace. Al Simon created this course because so many people don’t have a Tai Chi class near them and learning from a book is very difficult.

Al’s approach is very different to most Tai Chi classes and focuses on trying to build high level skills in the minimum of time. I have personally learnt from a variety of teachers and been all the way through this course from start to finish.

2) What’s Inside Chi Fusion?

You get access to a website that contains 4 different and progressively more challenging (and rewarding!) levels. There are

a number of web pages for each of the levels to help you remember key points. These provide pictures and notes to help reinforce the techniques. There is also a series of short videos for all of the exercises.

In addition, there is an optional accreditation scheme available where you can get feedback from Al via videos to help improve your techniques even further.

3) Who will benefit from Chi Fusion?

Basically almost anyone. Generally, if you are looking to improve your health, learn a new form of exercise or just find out what all the fuss is about, then Chi Fusion has a lot to offer.

Being able to do this in the privacy of your own house is also useful.

4) The Good (Pros)

A great way to learn that caters for several different learning styles.

The notes really help to master some of these techniques

Most teachers don’t know or won’t tell you the secrets to get the best from Tai Chi. No such problem here!

5) The Bad (Cons) –

This approach is different from learning lots of moves or forms. You start by learning postures and techniques and build up to short forms. It gets better results in the medium term, but will frustrate some people looking for a quick hit.

It does require perseverance. You need to set aside time and practice as regularly as possible. Ideally, an hour a week to learn the next technique and some form of daily practice is the best way to get results.

Currently nothing beyond the 4th level. It would be good to have more material for students who have spent about a year to get to the end of level 4.

6) The Bottom Line –

Chi Fusion is the most through resource I have seen to learn Tai Chi from home. Al is a well known and respected Tai Chi and this course has innovated the way that Tai Chi is taught.

You do need some will power and you build up to learning a form over a period of months, but with many interesting experiences along the way. My original Tai Chi teacher would simply make you follow his moves and never explain what he was doing. This course is much more open and teaches “secrets” that are rarely taught. Thoroughly recommended.

Not very long ago, I read a review on the Chi Fusion system and had to say it was obvious that the reviewer had not tried the course out and simply built the review by reading the sales page. Obviously an ‘expert’ then……

Let me share some of my thoughts about the system. I have a collection of over 1000 Tai Chi DVDs, videos and even more books. I ran an import business for a number of years getting hold of rare books on Tai Chi, Chi Kung and Chinese medicine.

As a result, I got to see an awful lot of material. In all honesty, less than 10% of these books and videos were really good. There was a lot of average material and even more than you could not learn from. Many of the books in particular had conflicting opinions and were downright confusing.

Learning quality Tai Chi and Chi Kung is difficult as there are few good teachers and it’s hard to work out whom and what is the best for you.

Most Tai Chi teachers simply teach by showing you a form and its various movements and let you follow along. Al’s Chi Fusion program does not. It is structured into 4 components to provide a structured method for improving your health and acquiring high levels skills as quickly as possible. It starts with introducing the basics postures and a set of exercises called the 8 Brocades, a time tested health set from China. This sets the foundation for the following stages. Many learners start to feel Chi during this first level which is pretty good going.

The next level starts to introduce much stronger health practices along with movements that powerfully move Chi through your body. These are challenging, but very effective. They literally teach you how to move more efficiently. Level 3 is all about rooting although maybe grounding would be a better word. It introduced you to the Zhang Zhong or standing practices which amplify your Chi. It then wraps this up with a short Tai Chi movement that teaches many key Tai Chi secrets.

The final level puts everything together to sow four movements that teach the primary ‘energies’ involved in Tai Chi in an innovative way that helps to make progress way beyond that of many teachers. In a year with dedication, you can gain skills rarely experienced by more seasoned practitioners.

There are many “purists” who will claim that you can’t learn from a book or DVD and there may be some validity to their arguments. Having seen hundreds of DVDs, I have to say that it very much depends on the quality of the tuition recorded on the DVD and the perseverance of the person watching it.

Some DVDs are complicated and difficult to learn from, others are much more straightforward. It also depends on where you are coming from. If you have some previous experience then this is much easier. Also people with a movement or dance background can often pick up forms more quickly. However, most people are not used to learn movements; we all tend to be more accustomed to learning facts from books.

The Chi Fusion course addresses the concerns over learning from Tai Chi DVDs and Qigong DVDs in this way. It tackles this in a number of ways.

It offers graduated exercises that start simply and get more complex over time. Some of the exercises in level 3 and 4, you are likely to keep working on for many years to keep building your skills

Each video details a brief movement or position and takes you through this in very short video clips. This enables makes it much easier for you to focus on one thing at a time and get this correct. Many teachers overload students with lots of movements which makes it difficult to follow.

There are written notes with each exercise that start with a simple explanation and then add important details when you have got the basics mastered. This combined approach is actually more effective that the vast majority of classes…..

There are a number of feedback exercises. Many movements can be checked or tested by a partner to see if your movement or rooting is correct. This enables you to make corrections even without a teacher being present.

There is a focus on feeling if the movement is correct and building a kinaesthetic based approach which really helps to develop results faster. .

Learning styles. Al’s approach allows for different learning styles. People tend to be either visual, touch or hearing focused. The written instructions help people from each of these 3 learning models.

For anyone interested in getting better feedback and becoming an instructor, there is a critique service where you submit videos to Al for his feedback. This overcomes any concerns about not having a teacher to hand.

This system was built to get high level results in the shortest timeframe. As a result, everything is carefully put together to work together and develop the sorts of results that take many students years to achieve. It is possible to get through the whole system in a year, but it will keep you going for many as you constantly improve and hone your skills. You can’t say that about many Tai Chi DVDs!

Chi Fusion is the name of a programme by Al Simon that teaches you Tai Chi and Qigong via the internet in a structured format designed to get the best results in the shortest time.

Let’s face it, finding a good Tai Chi or Qigong teacher is difficult. There may be no classes near to you; you may struggle for time or just not like a particular teacher. Sometimes you may have come to a dead end with your current teacher.

Al Simon put together this program to make it possible to learn high level skills from home using your computer. You still have to put in the work, but it makes it possible to fit this around you.

What is Tai Chi?

Tai Chi is an ancient Chinese martial art. However, it is renowned for its soft movements that have been proven in hundreds of studies to improve health and flexibility. There is no need to practice this as a martial art, in fact most practitioners use it to relax and unwind.

What is Qigong?

Qigong or Chi Kung literally translates as breath work or energy work. It is a method for working with Chi or your ‘life force’. It is a set of movements, breathing techniques and postures that help to maintain your health. Tai Chi is in fact a very sophisticated form of Chi Kung, one that combines methods of exercising your body with traditional health practices.

What is Chi Fusion?

Most Tai Chi is taught in a very similar fashion. Effectively, you copy the instructor’s movements and learn a form. Chi Fusion is very different in that it takes a much more traditional approach and teaches the building blocks behind each of the movements. The benefit of this is that your movements are much more effective and together. You can learn forms by rote and never get when is going on. This approach means that everything works better. It is also a combination of different Tai Chi building blocks and Chi Kung exercises that help you make progress far quicker than normal.
